Conceive of X Conceive: Qual utilizar?

We are beginning to understand that what we conceive of as "time" might one day disappear from our universe, giving us no sense of movement or direction.

Gostaria de saber por que foi usada a preposição "of" depois de "conceive" e se ela poderia ser retirada.

Simon,

"Of" faz parte de uma estrutura natural com o verbo "conceive": conceive of. A expressão inteira é: conceive of something/somebody as something (imaginar algo/alguém como algo). Eu, pessoalmente, não retiraria "of".

Complementing. I recommend a Google search of "what we conceive as" to see many examples where "of" might have appeared, but was omitted. And an occasional one (for ex., what we conceive as 'us') where the omission is fairly mandatory, in my opinion. There are also any number of the expression with "of." So I think you have to look at the particular sentence you are constructing and make a determination of the way that you think will be clearer to the reader. In terms of this particular sentence, on revision, I might have dropped the preposition; but it appears to be entirely a matter of personal choice here.
