FIRE FORCE Manga Series - Epigraphs
In literature, an epigraph is a phrase, quotation, or poem that is set at the beginning of a document, monograph or section thereof. The epigraph may serve as a preface to the work; as a summary; as a counter-example; or as a link from the work to a wider literary canon, with the purpose of either inviting comparison or enlisting a conventional context. A book may have an overall epigraphy that is part of the front matter, or one for each chapter.
We can find some epigraphs on Atsushi Ohkubo's Fire Force manga series.
Fire Force, which original title is En'en no Shōbōtai (炎炎ノ消防隊), is Ohkubo's 4th fictional work. It was serialized in Kodansha's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Magazine from September 2015 to February 2022, collected in 34 tankōbon volumes. In North America, the manga has been licensed for English language release by Kodansha USA. Ōkubo's style includes bright, vibrant colors, excellent line work, and abstract elements to provide a sense of odd surrealism in his pieces. As of May 2022, the Fire Force manga had over 20 million copies in circulation, making it one of the best-selling manga series.
Plot: Shinra Kusakabe is a young firefighter with pyrokinetic capabilities who earned the nickname "Devil's Footprints" for his ability to set his feet on fire at will, and was ostracized as a child for the fire that killed his mother and younger brother Sho twelve years ago. He joins Special Fire Force Company 8, which is dedicated to saving people from Spontaneous Human Combustion while investigating Companies 1 through 7 for potential corruption in their ranks. As he carries out his missions, Shinra and his allies uncover the current government's shady dealings with a mysterious doomsday cult known as the White Clad, whose goal is to recreate the Great Cataclysm, an event that plagued humanity more than 200 years ago.
Each epigraph are related to a specific theme such as fire extinction, world salvation, doppelgängers, altruism and so on. Ohkubo uses satire and morals to make readers reflect on the importance of life and how death need not be seen as something so tormenting and terrible.

NOTES:
(1) The Japanese word Nichi-rin (日輪) means Sun wheel or Sun ring literally. This epigraph must have been based on one of the works of Kayama Matazô (加山又造, 1927 - 2004), a Kyōto born Japanese Nihonga (Japanese style) painter. The word is an example of poetry to praise someone for beauty or behavior. In order to refer to the star at the center of the solar system, Japanese native speakers use the word taiyou (太陽 (たいよう)).
(2) Epigraphs from volumes 01 to 04 were not created by Ohkubo and his teamwork. They were created by the author of this article based on his own interpretation about Ohkubo's work. Fire Force is a fiction, therefore its events have no relation to reality.
