The prefix "de- " would mean "redução/diminuição" as in de-escalation - diminuição da tensão/da crise, etc. Here "diminuição na ênfase" ou seja "enquanto despreza/ignora/deixa de ver o que está se passando dentro da pessoa".
In the sentence at hand we could replace "...de-emphasize what was going on inside the person." by:
ignore what was going inside the person.
...and minimize what was going inside the person.
...and underemphasize what was going inside the person.
...and lessen what was going inside the person.
...and downplay the significance of what was going inside the person.
...and forget what was going inside the person.
There is, it would overplay external/outward action as the opposite of downplaying what is going inside the person.
Summing it up, you could be doing something for appearance´s sake, while people wouldn´t see the dark corners of you ( and of your personality/character, etc).
