Struggle x Strive: Qual a diferença?

Hi Guys,
A few days ago I talked to a foreign girl and I said: I struggle to do my best. The girl told me it sounds negative to say struggle, so I thought that Strive could be better and I redid the sentence. But I`m not sure why it sounds negative and I would like some assistance when I must use each one.
