In a way it means "o presente que continua chegando". It somehow meaning "o presente que continua sendo útil. (não só na hora em que é dado, ou seja que tem uma utilidade prática funcional)"
The imagery is of something that you give (or is given by someone) that has enduring consequences.
Generally we can say about things that 'outlasts' the time we think they would, or something that is beneficial in some lasting way. And sometimes with unexpected or 'on the side' (extra) advantages.
Sometimes the "gift" would mean 'presente' other times they translate as 'dádiva' (when appropriate), but what matters is the consequence.
