"Estava meio cabreiro no início, mas depois falei: 'Ah, faço isso desde pequeno; vambora."
In the beginning I was kinda ( ??? ), but then I said: "Whatever, I do this ever since I was little, let's go do it"
Obs.:
* Não precisa respeitar a minha tradução
* Tem que ser uma palavra do mesmo naipe / registro, ou seja, gíria
* Se puder diz de onde veio a gíria, porque nesse caso o que veio de um lado do Atlântico provavelmente não vai servir pro outro

Cabuloso can also mean "gore/goreish/creepy/unsettling/bizarre" etc.
Expressing cabuloso in a positive way could be "this is...awesome/awful/wild/wicked" but the first I would think would be "(it´s crazy, crazy!), after finishing a bungee jump like one they do at Verzasca Dam. At 1'08" in this video # 6, or the next (# 5).

Don´t positively know how they express that in English slang, but when they get close to the groud or water, they many would think ''Oh, s**t! "

To push himself to do something (dangerous or that makes one get himself trepidant) soon before doing it..., yes, I agree with the ones from Telma´s comment.
