I also like "implement." There is "implant" in English, meaning to establish, to embed. "Embed" may be another good choice here.

I'd use "procedures" or "processes" in place of "manners":

Big companies need to embed all the new processes in order to be competitive.

Achei a opção "carry through" mas confesso que nunca usei, gostaria da opinião dos colegas a respeito.

Se me permite, o uso do gerundismo na frase em português é desnecessário. Use: As grandes empresas, para competir, têm que implantar todas as novas maneiras...

Refazendo a frase: Para competir as grandes empresas têm que estar implantando todas as novas maneiras...

I guess to apply in this case means "put in effect".
