Que tal...?: How about...?
  • What should we do tonight? How about (seeing) a movie? [O que vamos fazer hoje à noite? Que tal (assistirmos) um filme?]
  • How about another game? [Que tal outro jogo?]
  • How about going for a meal? [Que tal irmos comer?]
  • What time should I pick you up? "How about five o'clock?" [A que horas eu devo te buscar? "Que tal às cinco em ponto?"]
Bons estudos.

Olá,

"What about...?" também é correto.

What about going for a walk now? / Que tal ir caminhar agora?

To me "what about" feels a little different than "how about."

http://www.english-test.net/forum/ftopic24042.html summarizes how I feel almost.
How about is used to make a suggestion about doing something (an action, as Alan says in his post), but it is the first suggestion made (it initiates the discussion) or it iniciates a new suggestion..

What about is a counter suggestion--not accepting the first suggestion, but offering an alternative suggestion.

I think that "How about" is short for "How would you feel about doing this?"
and I think that "What about" is short for "What would you think about doing this instead?"

A: How about a pizza and a movie? (first suggestion)
B: That sounds ok for a casual date, but I had something more extravagant in mind. What about going to
Maurius'? (counter suggestion)
A: I'm not that hungry and it costs too much. How about going to the mall and getting a quick bit to eat? (iniciating a new suggestion)

Do you agree or diasgree?
Cool Mary! I didn't know that difference. Let me ask you: if, on the second sentence, I say:

"That sounds ok for a casual date, but I had something more extravagant in mind. How about going to Maurius'?

Does that sound strange to you? I understood that "what about" would be more correct but, if I say "how about" would it sound strange to a native speaker?

Thanks in advance! ;)

Great topic, folks.

Once I noticed that there was something different between "how about" and "what about", then I researched about and wrote down some notes. I'm now adding Mary's comments to it! Thank you, Mary.

Question:

According to my notes, "What about" has more options of use:

How about:
- invitations
- suggestions

What about:
- invitations
- suggestions
- same meaning of "let's not forget", eg. "What about the test tomorrow?"
- when you've just remembered sth: (A) We're gonna spend a month travelling! (B) That's great! But... oh! What about the dogs?"
- when you're running through a list of options: "Sally is not available. What about calling Tom?" ("how" is possible here, but less likely).

Mary (and other colleagues, of course), I don't remember the sources from where I got these examples. Would you mind confirming whether they're right or not?

tks in advance

Do you guys agree with me?

Best Regards,

Peter,

A resposta do Thomas no link relacionado a seguir, esclarece a questão:

And you x how about you x what about you
Thomas escreveu:Se há uma diferença grande, não saberia dizer.

I am going on vacation this summer. And you? What about you? How about you?

Me? I am fine, thank you. And you? What about you? How about you?

I am getting sleepy. I think I'll go to bed. And you? What about you? How about you?

The three responses sound normal to me. Am I missing something?

''How about'' e "what about" podem ser usados - em alguns casos - nos mesmos contextos - com os mesmos sentidos.
