Frases diretas no Simple Present passamos para o Simple Past no discurso indireto;
Simple Past, Present Perfect e Past Perfect passamos para Past Perfect no discurso indireto e o Future passamos para o condicional.
Nas frases diretas com May, usamos might no discurso indireto.
Here passa a ser there; now torna-se then;this vira that; these passa a ser those; onde tem today escrevemos that day; yesterday se torna the day before/ previous day; tomorrow...the next/ the following day; last night... the night before/ the previous night; next year/ month/week passa a ser the following year/month/week; the day after tomorrow passa a ser in two days' time ;two weeks ago passa a ser two weeks before no discurso indireto e assim por diante.
Ex : Henry said, " I slept only a few hours last night" (discurso direto)
Henry said( that) he had slept only a few hours the night before.

How would you convert these two?

They said, "We live in São Paulo now."
They said, "We lived in São Paulo then."

If there is no appreciable time gap between the original utterance and the reported speech, could it not be (?)

They said they live in SP now.
They said that they (had) lived in SP then.

But if the elapsed time were substantial, say many months previously, then perhaps (?)

They said that they lived in SP at the time (then).
They said that they had lived in SP at the time (then).

The issue of time difference seems important to me.
