You should or will learn all about the phrasal as you practice reading, writing and listening. But I believe the most commoner use of it directly deals with "taking up, lifting or recovering from the ground or a low surface something dropped or fallen" as in "Zé picked up a dried stick."
In at particular activity, Zé's probably had to lower his body to lift the dried stick. You should "pick up" many other examples with pick up
as you diligently study and search.
