O verbo pick up tem diversas traduções, vou citar algumas:

Pick up

1. Take up something by hands. (Pegar algo com as mãos).
Ex: Jolie picked up the book in my desk. Jolie pegou (com as mãos) o livro na minha mesa (de escritório).

2. To come down with (a disease). (Ficar doente).
Ex: Anthony picked up a virus at college. (Anthony pegou [ficou doente por causa de] um vírus na universidade).

3. To continue after a break. (Continuar algo após um intervalo).
Ex: Let's pick up the discussion after dinner. (Vamos continuar a discussão/conversa depois do jantar).

4. To acquire knowledge by learning or experiencing. (Adquirir [conhecimento] através do aprendizado/experiência).
Ex: I picked up English very quickly. (Eu [''peguei'' - informal em português] aprendi Inglês rapidamente).

5. To buy. (Comprar).
Ex: Next month I'll pick up hundreds of DVDs to watch at home. (No próximo mês eu comprarei centenas de DVDs para assistir em casa.)

O verbo frasal "Pick up" é um dos mais comuns,se não for o mais comum no sentido de "Ir buscar alguém/alguma coisa em algum lugar".Vejam:

I´ll drop by to pick you up at nine.(Vou passar para te buscar às nove.)
I went to pick her up at the school.(Eu fui buscar ela na escola.)

Não lembro se já perguntei isso aqui no fórum ou não:

"Pick up" é usado necessariamente qdo se busca alguém com um veículo, não é?

Razão da minha pergunta: imagine que uma pessoa desce do ônibus perto da minha casa, me liga e diz: não tenho como sair daqui, está chovendo muito e não tenho guarda-chuva. Daí eu decido ir "buscar" a pessoa com o meu guarda-chuva. Como fica esse "buscar" aí?

Podem dar risada do meu exemplinho, mas dúvida é dúvida...

Recomendo o seguinte:

Usa-se "get" para buscar em um sentido geral.
Usa-se "fetch" em BrE mas é incomum nos EUA.

She's just gone to get the kids from school.(Longman)
She’s gone to fetch the kids from school.(Oxford)

You should or will learn all about the phrasal as you practice reading, writing and listening. But I believe the most commoner use of it directly deals with "taking up, lifting or recovering from the ground or a low surface something dropped or fallen" as in "Zé picked up a dried stick."

In at particular activity, Zé's probably had to lower his body to lift the dried stick. You should "pick up" many other examples with pick up as you diligently study and search.

"In at particular..." should have read, "In that particular..."

Como a Flavia disse, TAMBÉM se pode usar o Pick Up como "buscar" alguém de carro, como em: "I went to pick up the kids at school" ("Eu fui buscar/pegar as crianças na escola"), pelo menos nos EUA.

Pick Up, na frase "Pick up the phone" é atender: "Pick up the phone!" = "Atenda o telefone!", "I'll pick up the phone" = "Eu vou atender o telefone", etc.

to pick up = aprender sem esforço, sem aulas
I picked up French while working on a ship.
At the meeting, I picked up on her desire to work for a different company.

to pick up = aumentar
The rain is starting to pick up. The storm is getting worse.
Business was bad, but it is picking up as we get closer to Christmas.
